Things had been pretty mechanical for the last few days. Life was being lived in something of a haze for the two of them, Alhena occasionally giving them a wakeup call.
But one day, everything smashed into Mia like Vane crashing into the ground.
She simply didn't get out of bed one day, leaving Draco to fend for himself that day.
She just curled up under the covers, softly crying in her pillow.
Ruthless.
She was so ruthless in the war.
And she was so selfish towards Draco.
She deserves this.

"I'm sorry. Here, I'll show you how to make a good meal."
A kiss on his cheek and she leads him downstairs.
"We're starting to run low, but we should have enough for another day or two's worth of proper meals. I'll get more groceries tomorrow."

In the meantime, Draco clutched Mia's hand as they headed down into the kitchen.

"Is there anything you'd like to learn how to make?"
The book has everything from simple recipes like toast to more difficult recipes like souffles.

Already done that a few times when he tried to heat some leftovers.

She idly turns a page.
"What were you in the mood for? Something sweet? A real meal?"
The current page has a simple recipe for French toast.

"All right. You get the frying pan and spatula. I'll get the plates and forks."

"Frying pan, or skillet. The large, flat one with a lip and a handle."
She gets out a frying pan and shows him.
"And the spatula. A flat, usually slotted head with a handle."
And she holds the spatula out for him to see.
"Can you at least get the ingredients, then? Bread, milk, eggs, butter, cinnamon, and vanilla?"

Ingredients were set out, ready to go.

That's more like it.
A kiss on his cheek, a murmured "Thank you," and she gets to work.
She broke one of the eggs in the plate, with a shallow lip perfect for dipping, and used the fork to break the yolk and mix it with the whites.
"See? It's really not too hard," she says, picking up another egg.

She moves to put away the rest of the eggs. Two should be enough for this.

"Bugger!"
Obviously too hard in the middle as he lifted up his hand in disgust, bits of egg shell and white and yolk dripping from it.
From:

"Carefully, like this."
Once he's cleaned off his hand, she his them in hers, giving him the egg and the fork, guiding him to softly tap the base of the tines against the shell until it cracks in the middle.
Naturally, the situation has left her very close to him.

"Oh, all right. Is that all? Seemed more complicated. Are we done?" No, can't be right. They didn't look anything like the french toast he's had before.

Forks help since that means less mess.
She moves to stand next to him instead of behind him, but they're shoulder to shoulder as she adds the milk, cinnamon, and vanilla.

"Anything particular way to stir this? Or number of times important?"
From:
no subject
"No. Just make sure it's all blended together. I'll get the skillet ready."
She uses the spatula to put a little butter in the pan and starts a fire underneath it.
"If you want, I'll be the one to dip the bread in the batter while you cook it."
That way he doesn't have to worry about any mess.

He just hoped he didn't burn anything this time.

"Here, switch places with me. It'll be easier that way."
She hands him the spatula and takes the fork. With more closeness, of course.
Then she takes a slice of bread and dips it before putting it in the pan.
"It should take about a minute to cook on each side."
From:

So it was some relief when he got the first piece on a plate.
"Now are we done?"
From:
no subject
A kiss on his cheek.
"You're doing all right."
From:
no subject
"Good, guess I can keep going then," he begrudgingly replied.
From:
no subject
"I'll take the food to the table. What do you like on your toast? Fruit, powdered sugar, syrup?"
Once the plates of French toast goodness are there, Mia goes to get some tea.
