"Happy birthday, Mia."

Mia looks at him funny from her desk, now finally clear of books since the library now has their office filled with them.

"Nash, my birthday was months ago. You know that."

Though she was curious about the wrapped package he was holding out for her.

There's an awkward pause before he tries, "Happy half-birthday?"

She smiles and goes, "If I was born in February, then my half-birthday is in August."

"Three-quarters-birthday?"

"What are you getting at?"

He puts one hand on the back of his head.

"Aw, don't make me say it, Mia."

"Say what?"

"You know... Why people would be giving you presents."

Oh.

Oh.

She takes the present and gives him a quiet, "Thank you, but there's not even a date yet."

"Doesn't matter. The sooner I accept all of this, the better off all of us are going to be. No matter what, I do want you to be happy. And much as I hate to say it sometimes, Draco's not a bad person, or at least no worse than I am."

He puts the present on her desk and watches as she opens it.

"Nash," she says in surprise, "You didn't have to get me something like this. It must have cost so much-"

He holds up a hand to stop her and says, "I want you to have it."

Mia looks from the gift to Nash and says, "You know, Draco's going to be jealous when he finds out you gave me a present and not him."

Nash shrugs and says, "He'll have to deal with it. Maybe I'll give him something. One step at a time?"

"I do appreciate that. And I'm certain that Draco does, too."

And then they're quiet, a more peaceful silence than the two have had in a long time, broken only when Nash asks, "About time to call it a day, isn't it?"

Mia puts some paperwork in her book and closes it with a nod.

"Thank you, Nash."

"Not a problem."
