The time had finally come. The planning was over and it was about to happen.

Kyle and Jessica were getting married.

It was a day of joy and bittersweet nostalgia for Mia, caused in part because Nash was her escort down the (figurative, as the wedding was on the docks) aisle. The only time they would ever walk down the aisle together. There weren't any words between them, not in front of close to the entire population of the world. But there were some whispers in the crowd.

Thankfully, the whispers stopped when the priest spoke.

“Why hello there! Aren't you kids all gussied up. Are you going to a fancy dress party?”

Kyle was already uncomfortable enough in his tuxedo and pulled-back hair, but this prompted him to actually say, “Great, we would get the loony one.”

“The loony what? Oh, I guess I'm going to be a priest for the party.”

The old man looked left and right before adding, “Is this my patio?”

A ripple of giggles went through the guests as the message was passed back.

The priest looked at the huge crowd, amazed.

“My! Are all these people coming to my party? I better get the snacks ready.”

“I still don't know how he was able to remember his vow to serve Althena,” Jessica said, a hand on her head.

“Althena? Isn't she my wife? Oh, did you children hear? We've had to move into a little place in Meribia ever since our house fell down.”

It was after this line that Master Mel gently led the old man away and another priest came up to perform the ceremony, which otherwise went off without a hitch except for the actual hitching.

At the reception, Nash had asked Mia to speak with him in a discreet little corner of Black Rose Street. He gave her a little sigh and simply asked, “What happened?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean between us. What happened?”

Her turn to sigh.

“Draco, I suppose. I wasn't expecting to fall in love with him. I wasn't even expecting him to fall in love with me. He was- I don't know, he needed a friend. I never tried doing anything to make him fall in love with me.”

He runs a hand over his hair.

“I know, you never really have to do anything to get someone to fall in love with you. You're just that wonderful.”

“Nash.....”

“I guess what I mean is, what was it about him that made you fall in love with him? What was it that I did wrong?”

Mia folds her arms a little, loose.

“That was just it. You didn't really do anything to let me know. I mean, Draco wasn't afraid to hold my hand, or be my first kiss. Or at least, he wasn't so afraid that he wouldn't do it.”

“How was I supposed to know?” he asks, a little frustrated.

She almost looks a little cross when she says, “How were you supposed to know? How weren't you supposed to know? I've told you at least twice during the war that I loved you. I thought that would be enough for you to know. What else did you expect me to do?”

“I don't know, maybe act on it?” he says, getting a bit angry himself.

“How was I supposed to when I didn't know how you would react?”

“You didn't expect me to make a move, did you? You don't just go up to the Guildmaster of Vane and kiss her.”

“Oh? Well maybe that's what you did wrong,” Mia says, her voice getting louder. “You've noticed that the only time we've kissed was when I kissed you goodbye.”

“Fine then!” Nash shouts before crushing his lips against Mia's, holding her tight.

But that only lasts a second or two before she pushes him away.

“Nash, stop it! It's over. It's been over.”

“By the goddess, Draco isn't even here right now.”

“Because he's away in a war, and I'm going to wait for him. I love him, and he's the one I want to be with.”

“You've already been with him,” Nash mutters.

“So what if I have?” Mia says, her voice only a little quieter. “It's clear enough that you weren't interested in it with me. You've never even attempted to hold my hand.”

“Just because I have respect for you-”

“Now you're saying Draco doesn't respect me?”

“Are you the only one he's ever been with?” he asks.

“That's none of your business!”

“So no, then?”

Mia glares at him.

“Draco might have made a mistake, but it's no worse than what you've done to me,” she answers, softly and dangerously.

“He's hurt you.”

“You've hurt me, too.”

“And he gets another chance but I don't?”

“You've had your chances. I'm with Draco now, and that is not going to change.”

She turns from him and walks away.

Nash actually scowls as she leaves.

“Forget about me coming in to work tomorrow!” he calls after her.

She turns back to call in return, “Don't bother coming in for the week!”

Damn work.

Damn Nash.

Damn war.

If things are this bad for her here, she can only imagine what things must be like for Draco right now.

“Goodness, this party isn't going well for you, is it?” the loony priest asks Mia.

“Not terribly well, no,” she replies.

Since most everyone was focusing on Kyle and Jessica, Mia was able to leave without anyone else asking her any questions. When she goes back to Vane, she spends a little bit of time beating up her pillow before finally laying down on her bed.

“Damnitall...” she half-sobs into the pillow, more a cry of frustration and anger than sadness.

Alhena hops up onto the bed, whining a little and nuzzling her.

It won't solve any problems, but it would make her feel better.

She'll go to Milliways to cool down tomorrow. For now, she doesn't want to move.

“Please come home soon, Draco.”
